4,500 US Youth Soccer players kickoff the 2012 Region I Championships in Pennsylvania

Lancaster, Pa. (June 28, 2012) – Teams, parents, referees, tournament officials and volunteers gathered at Clipper Magazine Stadium this afternoon for opening ceremonies to kickoff the beginning of the 2012 US Youth Soccer Region I (East) Championships, presented by the National Guard. Preliminary games begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. at Classics Park Soccer Complex, Hempfield High School and Elizabethtown College in Lancaster, Pa.
 
The National Guard's partnership with US Youth Soccer is focused on enriching the soccer experience by positively influencing players and coaches in areas of leadership and character development while adding a strong presence of American pride.
 
Seven teams are returning to regional competition as 2011 US Youth Soccer Region I Champions. On the girl’s side, Under-15 Match Fit Chelsea Colchesters (NJ) and Under-18 FC Pennsylvania Strikers are back to defend their titles. Boys returning regional champions include the Under-14 Bethesda SC Lions (MD), Under-16 Boys SDFC Gauchos (NJ), Under-17 Beadling SC 94/95 (PA-W), Under-18 Penn Fusion Celtic and defending National Champions Under-19 YMS Thunder (E-PA).
 
Numerous other players are returning to this week’s tournament in hopes of realizing their goal of advancing to the 2012 US Youth Soccer National Championships in Rock Hill, S.C., July 23-29, at Manchester Meadows.
 
The top 272 boys and girls US Youth Soccer teams from 15 State Associations that make up US Youth Soccer Region I will compete for the regional title. Preliminary games will be held June29-July 1 at Classics Soccer Park, Hempfield High School and Elizabethtown College. Semifinals and finals will be held at Classics Soccer Park and Hempfield High School on July 2 and 3, respectively.
 
The US Youth Soccer National Championships will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the Under-14 through Under-19 Boys and Girls age groups as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the Under-15 through Under-17 Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 60 teams
