Kingston, R.I. (June 26, 2014) – Teams, parents, referees, tournament officials and volunteers gathered Meade Stadium this afternoon for opening ceremonies to kickoff the beginning of the 2014 US Youth Soccer Region I (East) Championships. Preliminary games begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I.

Twelve teams are returning to regional competition as 2013 US Youth Soccer Region I Champions. On the girl’s side, Under-13 Delaware Rush (DE), Under-14 NEFC Elite (MA), Under-15 YMS Premier Xplosion (PA-E), Under-17 Toms River FC United (NJ), Under-18 Beadling SC Thunder (PA-W) and Under-19 CFC United (CT) are back to defend their titles. Boys returning regional champions include the Under-13 PDA Donovan (NJ), national finalists Under-14 FSA FC Navy (CT), Under-15 Penn Fusion SA (PA-E), defending national champions Under-17 Smithtown Kickers SC Arsenal (NY-E), Under-18 OBGC Rangers (MD) and Under-19 PDA Harkes (NJ).

Numerous other players are returning to this week’s tournament in hopes of realizing their goal of advancing to the 2014 US Youth Soccer National Championships, presented by the National Guard, in Germantown, Md., July 21-27 at Maryland SoccerPlex.

The top 260 boys and girls US Youth Soccer teams from 15 State Associations that make up US Youth Soccer Region I will compete for the regional title. All games will be held June 27-July 1 at the University of Rhode Island.

The US Youth Soccer National Championships will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the Under-13 through Under-19 Boys and Girls age groups as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the Under-14 through Under-18 Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 96 teams.
