BEAVERCREEK, Ohio (June 24, 2014) – The final teams are set to compete in the 2014 US Youth Soccer Region II (Midwest) Championships in Beavercreek, Ohio. From the 216 teams that started, 14 will be crowned. Winners in the Under-13 through Under-19 Boys and Girls matches will win a Regional title, and earn a berth to the 2014 US Youth Soccer National Championships July 22-27 in Germantown, Md.

Four returning champions are still in the running – Under-16 Girls Ambassadors FC (OH-N), Under-17 Girls NSA Jaguars (IL), Under-19 Girls Team Chicago Academy Botafogo (IL) and Under-15 Boys Michigan Wolves (MI). Three local Ohio South teams remain – U-16 Boys OP Eagles Green, U-13 Girls CUP Gold 00-01 and U-19 Girls OP Eclipse.

Highlights from Semifinal Matches:

Cicero Mayas from Illinois defeated Under-13 Boys Missouri team Lou Fusz Caleca-Geerling in a close, competitive match that went all the way to penalty kicks. Both teams played strongly, but neither could get past the others’ backline. Cicero’s skillful kickers ultimately got the win and they move on to face WAZA FC Juniors from Michigan in Wednesday’s final.

In the U-17 Girls semifinal, Iowa Rush Nike’s winning streak came to an end after being defeated 2-0 against NSA Jaguars from Illinois. The two goals were scored late in the second half. Alexis Pelafas found the back of the net for NSA in the 75th minute, and Emma McCarthy got the assurance goal in the 82nd minute. Although NSA is already guaranteed a spot to Nationals through their National League qualification, they’ll aim to defend their 2013 Regional title in tomorrow’s final match.

Defending champs Ambassadors FC from Ohio-North will get another shot at a regional title after defeating Under-16 Girls team Michigan Jaguars Green 3-1 in semifinals. Ambassadors got a 2-0 lead after goals by Sarah Krause and Alexandra Wright. In the 65th minute, a set piece helped Michigan Jaguars get on the board after Madison Pogarch headed one in, but Sarah Krause swiftly notched a second goal just two minutes later giving Ambassadors the 3-1 victory.

Under-18 Boys team St. Croix from Minnesota eliminated 2013 regional champs Cup Gold from Ohio South after defeating them 3-0 in semifinals. St. Croix opened the scoring early with a Joseph Elwell goal in the 10th minute. The match continued on and saw lots of action in the final minutes when Cup Gold got an equalizer which was denied after being called offside. Moments later St. Croix added a second when Benjamin Klundt made it fly into the upper 90. CUP once again found the back of the net in the 90th minute but was denied again for being offside. With only seconds left in the match Nathan J. Purdie skillfully beat Cup’s keeper for the dagger and the 3-0 win.

In a battle between Ohio teams, Cleveland FC from Ohio North defeated U-14 Girls team Cup Gold from Ohio South 3-0. Vanessa DiNardo got a pair of goals in the 13th and 63rd minutes, and Allyson Sidloski added a third goal for Cleveland in the 67th minute. Cleveland FC aims to continue their unbeaten streak as they face Campton United Navy from Illinois in the final.

Illinois team Chicago Fire Youth Soccer Club moves on to the finals after defeating U-17 Boys Classics Eagles Red from Ohio South in penalty kicks. Both teams entered halftime scoreless. Connor Davis gave Classics Eagles the lead in the 67th minute, but Chicago Fire responded a minute later with a Blake Van Bruggen goal. The 1-1 tie lead to overtime, but neither team found the much desired goal. Chicago Fire’s PK goals ultimately outweighed the Eagles’ goals, giving them the victory and a spot in tomorrow’s final versus Lexington FC White from Kentucky.

Michigan Wolves defeated Under-15 Boys team Sporting Blue Valley from Kansas with two late goals. Sporting had the lead for most of the match, after an Ian Harmon goal in the 28th minute. Just before the final whistle Louis Meeks gave Michigan hope getting the equalizer in the 80th minute, and Abraham Johnson followed seconds later with his late game heroics, scoring to win the match 2-1. The win moves them forward to the U-15 Boys final versus Challenger Crew from Ohio North, where they will aim for a second straight regional title.

Returning National Champion, Under-19 Girls Team Chicago Academy Botafogo from Illinois, get the chance to get their third straight Regional title after defeating Indiana team Carmel United 4-0. Zoe Swift started the scoring in the first half with a pair of back to back goals in the 32nd and 43rd minutes. Elizabeth Bartels gave Team Chicago a 3-0 lead in the 47th minute, and Ashley Handwork gave them a 4-0 win with a header in the 55th minute.
