CUP 02 Gold (OH-S) flew to a 5-1 win over Sporting OFC 2002 Elite (NE) in the final group stage game. With today’s win, CUP got its third win of the week and will advance on to the 2017 US Youth Soccer National Championships semifinals. Throughout the last three games, the CUP side has outscored its opponents 12-1.
In today's match, Sporting OFC was the first to strike with a goal in the 5th minute of play by Allison Napora. However, it wasn’t long before CUP leveled the match when Kailyn Dudukovich found the back of the net to level the score. In the 30th minute, Brooklyn Harris took a shot that hit the left post and found its way into goal. Dudukovich added her second goal of the first half in the 38th minute and CUP went into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
CUP’s Sydney Jones had a fantastic second half with two goals, one of which she converted off of a penalty kick.
The CUP Gold side did not have an ideal start to the match, but Coach Bobby Puppione was proud of how his team bounced back and he looks forward to the challenge that lies ahead.
“We started off a little bit slow, but I thought the girls responded very well. We scored five goals after that and took control of the game. We played some absolutely fantastic soccer.”
The next step on CUP’s journey is the semifinal match that will take place on Saturday, July 29 against La Roca PO 02 (UT). In order to prepare for that game, CUP will take very precise measures in order to ensure success.
“Our focus turns into recovery as we head into Saturday’s semifinal match. First off, we need to get out of the heat and drink plenty of fluids, eat well, stay off of our feet and do some recovery,” Puppione said. “We’ll have a light session tomorrow and spend some time together as a team to continue to grow together as a family.”
