How they got to Nationals

After a mid-table finish in the National League, Arlington SA 2002 Red (VA) qualified for the Eastern Regional Championships by winning the Eastern Regional League in the spring. The ERL title provided signs of things to come, as Arlington excelled at regionals in Spotsylvania, Va. The Virginia side won its group while outscoring opponents, 10-to-1. It continued that dominance in the knockout rounds, as it finished the tournament with five wins in as many games — with each victory coming by a three-goal margin.

How they got to Nationals

After a pair of dominant wins to start its week at the Midwest Regional Championships, Club Ohio Green 1 (OH-S) needed late heroics to advance out of the group. In a match with Group C co-leader Indiana Elite FC 2002 Premier (IN), Club Ohio conceded back-to-back goals with three minutes remaining to fall behind, 2-0. Needing a tie to advance, the Ohio South side remarkably responded with a pair of goals in the 79th and 80th minutes — tying the game just before the final whistle. The 2-2 draw allowed Club Ohio to move on, and it followed up a big semifinal win with a 1-0 victory over REV Academy Black (MN) to win the Midwest Regional Championship.

How they got to Nationals

It took several dramatic finishes, but 02 NCFC Elite (NC) earned a ticket to Nationals by winning the Southern Regional Championships. Needing a win or tie in its final group play game, NCFC found itself down by two goals with just five minutes remaining. However, two late goals, including one in stoppage time, allowed NCFC to earn a draw and move on to the quarterfinals. Following a comfortable quarterfinal win, NCFC needed another last-minute goal and penalties to advance to the final, where it defeated FC Dallas 02 Premier (TX-N), 1-0, to win the regional title.

Tuzos

How they got to Nationals

After advancing to the National Championships final last season, Tuzos Academy 02 (AZ) is back as the Far West Regional Champion. The Arizona side finished in the middle of its National League group in 2017-18, but it won the FWRL Desert Premier League to qualify for regionals. In Hawaii, Tuzos went 1-0-2 to advance as the Group C runner-up. After a tight quarterfinal win and blowout victory in the semifinals, Tuzos faced Boca Juniors LA 02 (CA-S) in the championship match. A last-minute goal allowed the Arizona side to force overtime, and Tuzos eventually won in penalties to claim its second straight Far West Regional Championship and punch its ticket back to Frisco.

How they got to Nationals

It came down to a winner-take-all matchup on the final day of the season, as Washington Premier 2002 Black (WA) earned the result needed to win the National League Black Division and punch its ticket to Nationals. Washington won each of its games in North Carolina to start the season, but it secured just one point in its first two games in Las Vegas to set up a crucial final matchup with 2017 National Championships finalist Tuzos Academy 02 (AZ). After falling behind in the second half, Washington received two goals from Braeden Pryor to get the points it needed to win the group. Washington and Tuzos will match up again in Frisco, as they meet on the first day of play.

How they got to Nationals

St. Louis Scott Gallagher SC Elite (MO), a 2017 National Championships semifinalist, earned its way back to Frisco for second time via the National League title — this time winning the Blue Division crown. The Missouri side went undefeated while posting a 5-0-1 record in league play. Despite that mark, it needed a late goal to earn a tiebreaker advantage against a hard-charging Boca OC 02 White (CA-S) side in one of the wildest division finishes in National League history. Scott Gallagher will now focus on improving on last year’s semifinals run, when it came up just short against the eventual National Champion.

How they got to Nationals

After coming up one goal short of advancing to the semifinals at last year’s National Championships, Midwest United FC 02 Royal (MI) earned a return trip by finishing as the National League Red Division winners. The Michigan side won its first four games before drawing in its penultimate matchup of the National League season. That tie left it in a must-win situation when it faced then group-leader Chicago Magic Soccer (IL) on the season’s final day. Midwest earned a 2-0 victory in that matchup to help it win the division and punch a ticket back to Frisco.

National League White: Solar 02 Stricker (TX-N)

How they got to Nationals

Defending National Champion Solar 02 Stricker (TX-N) is back to defend its title — once again competing locally in Frisco, Texas. For the second straight year, Solar qualified through its performance in the National League, as it won the White Division in 2017-18. The North Texas side dropped one of its three games in North Carolina before earning three victories in Orlando to distance itself from the rest of the division. The 15 points it compiled during the first two events of the season proved to be enough, as no team managed to catch Solar when the dust settled in Las Vegas. Once again, Solar will have the advantage of playing close to home, but it now must do so with the target of defending National Champion on its back.
