NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (July 25, 2008)
- Twenty teams remain in the quest for the 2008 US Youth Soccer National Championship as 10 age groups completed round robin play today at Burns Park Soccer Complex in North Little Rock, Ark. The Under-17 boys and girls will take the field tonight at 7 p.m. CT to complete the 12 championship finals matchups taking place over Saturday and Sunday.

Three of four defending 2007 national champions in this year's field, Force Football Club (MI) Under-19 Girls, Andromeda 90 (N-TX) Under-18 Boys, Baltimore Casa Mia Bays (MD) Under-15 Boys, took the field today with a chance to advance to the weekend finals. All three were able to get the needed result to advance to the weekend.

Needing a tie to secure, Baltimore Casa Mia Bays (MD) Under-15 Boys who have already claimed the US Youth Soccer National League title and Region I Championship took the field today against Region II Champion and National League opponent, Chicago Fire Juniors. In their league match in December the teams played to a 0:0 tie. Today, the same result looked imminent until Jonathan Guzman broke the tie late in the second half (73:00) to give the Bays the 1:0 win.

The Bays will look to pull 'the double' over the weekend winning the national championship and the league championship in the same year.

Joining the Bays in the final will be Solar Red (N-TX) who also punched their ticket to Little Rock via the National League. Needing the win to advance, Solar scored early to set the tone for the match. Down one, Gleison Da Silva hit the equalizer for Boston Blast (MA) in the 23rd. Uriel Sota finished the second half with a score to give Solar the 2:1 advantage. As the game wore on Alfred Karoma hit his stride scoring in the 45th and 55th minutes to give Solar the 4:1 win and slot in the championship final against the Bays. In their December league game, the Bays edged Solar 3:2.

Solar will also send its Under-19 Boys team to the final regardless of today's result in the Under-19 Boys where they faced KC Wizards Juniors (KS). These two teams will end their youth soccer careers playing for the oldest youth sports trophy in the country, the James P. McGuire Cup, first awarded to the Under-19 Boys champion in 1935. Today, the teams played one another in the final round robin game that ended in a 1:1 draw.

The US Youth Soccer National League, has come of age in only its first year with seven of the eight available national championship final slots taken by teams from the new league of Under-15 and Under-16 Boys and Girls.

The Under-15 Girls Dallas Texans 93 Red will look to pull 'the double' after successfully fending off the Scorpions Elite (MA) today 4:1. The Texans, like Casa Mia, won the 2007-2008 National League title. Leading the Texans today was Clarissa Wedemeyer who scored her third and fourth goals (2:00, 46:00) of the tournament to lead all scorers in the division with four.

The Texans will face So Cal Blues – Dodge on Saturday thanks to a Blues 2:1 win over Lonestars 93 Red (S-TX) today. Both teams were feeling their way through the first half. After the half, Haley Rosen broke the tie for So Cal off a goal in the 44th. Teammate Gabriella Garcia added a second goal for the Southern California side in the 60th.

In their league match-up in April, it was the Texans 1:0 over So Cal.

The Under-18 Boys Andromeda 90 (N-TX) played a brilliant second half netting four goals to defeat MPS McLean FC (VA) 4:1 and take a step closer to defending their 2007 national title. The defending champs scored four goals in 12 minutes starting with Jochen Graf's in the 45th.

Meeting Andromeda will be Shattuck-St. Mary's (MN) who shutout Cisco Toros (AZ) 2:0. Shattuck's Vasilios Kyriakopoulos scored in the first minute of play and teammate Teal Bunbury doubled the advantage in the 32nd. In the round robin, Shattuck and Andromeda played to a 2:2 tie. Shattuck's, a preparatory school, now has a chance to win two national titles as the school's hockey club won the Under-18 Boys USA Hockey National Championship earlier this year.

Force Football Club sealed their trip to the final yesterday against FC Pennsylvania Strikers (3:0) as the Under-19 Girls look to defend their title from last year. Today, Force played Challenge 89 (S-TX) in a final dress rehearsal. Force was up 2:0 when Laura Heyboer added her fifth of the tournament in the 82nd (3:0). With little time remaining, Jessica Rathweg tallied for Challenge (89:00). The Under-19 national title will be determined just as the 2007 Under-18s with Force facing Slammers FC (CA-S).

Grand Rapids Crew Juniors (MI) needed a win today against SCSA Gold (NC) to have a chance to move out of their Under-14 Boys pool and a little help from the NJSA and Arsenal match-up. Grand Rapids had only one goal scorer in Jason Stacy but Stacy's hat trick (27:00, 49:00 and 70:00) today was more than enough. The Crew didn't get the help they needed in the other game and will not advance. The Crew finished their first national championships 1-1-1.

""We had to get a result today, so we lit a little fire under the boys and they came out and did what they needed to do,"" said Todd Stacy, assistant coach for the Crew. ""Every team here is just exceptional.  This is a great event and experience for the boys. Someone is going to walk away that cup. We want it, but that wasn't in the cards this year.""

NJSA 04 Gunners from New Jersey are also experiencing their first trip to the national tournament and with much success. Today the Gunners met a club rich in history with the Arsenal FC from Southern California in the Under-14 Boys. Winning their previous two matches, today New Jersey found themselves down 1:0 after a Raul Mendiola goal in the 26th for Arsenal. The California side would hold and secure their place in the final. Today's match offered a preview of what's to come as the two teams will meet to determine the Under-14 Boys national champion.

New Jersey is led by soccer great Tab Ramos, a former U.S. national team and Major League Soccer standout, ""This is incredible for us, we knew we belonged here but getting results here is a different story and fortunately we were able to do that during the first two games. This [Arsenal] is the best team we have faced so it gives me a good idea of what I want to do tomorrow. They have a lot of special players so you really can't prepare for those.""

""I made it to regionals but never got here [US Youth Soccer National Championships],"" said Ramos thinking back to his US Youth Soccer days. ""This is a new experience for me."" Ramos told his players that, ""despite playing in the Olympics and three World Cups I never played in the national championships so enjoy this because this could be your only chance. With the thousands of great teams in the country we are one of two in the finals. So it's all down to one game.""
