Lancaster, Pa. (July 3, 2011) – Preliminary games are complete at the 2011 US Youth Soccer Region I (East) Championships in Lancaster, Pa. The field of 282 teams, from 13 states and 15 state associations, completed three days of preliminary play to narrow the field to 72 teams for tomorrow's semifinals.
Semifinal matches are scheduled to be played at Hempfield High School and Classics Park. Regional champions will be crowned following final games on Tuesday, July 5 to see who will represent the East at the 2011 US Youth Soccer National Championships this July in Phoenix, Ariz.
Seeking out future roster spots, over 250 college coaches have registered for the Region I Championships, as well as members of U.S. Soccer Youth National Team Programs. Year after year the coaches enjoy the level of play and the fact that the teams are playing for advancement in the National Championship Series.
Five teams returned in 2011 as defending Region I champions. After preliminary play, only two, Under-15 Girls SAC United Premier (MD) and Under-16 Girls Scorpions Elite (MA), have advanced to the semifinals in an attempt to win back-to-back regional championships.

Notes from a few of today's games…
Under-16 Girls
The winner of the Under-16 Girls Group D came down to a Sunday clash between Bethesda Freedom 94/95 (MD) and Empire USA Academy (NY-W), with a win or draw sending Bethesda on to the semifinals. Empire established their intentions to advance early on as Alexa Antetomaso scored in the 18th minute to put the pressure on Bethesda. Bethesda forged ahead however and found the equalizer shortly after halftime from Tyler Lussi to grab the needed point and move on to the next round with a 1-1 draw.
PDA Celtic (NJ) and Bruno United (RI) had already been eliminated from advancing to the knockout rounds, but PDA ended the tournament on a positive note with a 7-0 victory on the final day of group play. Ani Sarkisian led the way with a hatrick and Nadine Goerke added two as Salina Williford and Alexandra Schlobohm each added one of their own as the New Jersey side settled for a third place finish.
North United Fire (PA-W) held the tiebreaker advantage over FC Delco Lightning (PA-E) atop Group A heading into the last day of qualifying, and needed a two-goal win against Lady Owls (CT) to ensure a spot in the semis. After Fire took a two goal lead in the first 13 minutes on goals from Morgan Williams, Lady Owls leveled with back-to-back goals in the 26th from Rachel Ugolik and Caroline Massey to suddenly take the momentum. Amber Fichter put Fire back in front before halftime, and after several chances from both teams, Williams grabbed her hatrick in the 75th to send her team on to the next round with a 4-2 win.
FC Delco Lightning (E-PA) knew its best chance to qualify for the semifinals was to defeat WVSC Rowdies 94 (WV) 4-0, and that's exactly what they did, but they didn't get the result they needed from North United Fire (PA-W) as they lose out on the top spot due to goal differential. Karina Kovalcik notched the first Delco goal in the 39th and Kristen Gatti made it 2-0 in the 58th. As Fire were only up one on the next field over, Anna Soccorsi grabbed two goals in a five minutes span to give Delco the result they needed, but Fire's late goal ended their hopes and chances to advance.
Under-17 Boys
A win or draw versus 2010 semifinalist Annandale United FC (VA) would put SAC United Premier (MD) into the semifinals, and they delivered with a 2-0 victory in the Under-17 Boys Group C. Annandale was trying to build upon their shootout loss in last year's semis, but James Dubyoski picked off a loose ball in front of an open net in the 30th minute to give SAC a lead they would never relinquish. Colin Bonner added an insurance goal in the final moments to send SAC on their way and stop Annandale short of the knockout round.
Jersey Crew Tornadoes (NJ) needed a result and some help from the other game in Group C to advance and they got neither in a 1-1 draw with Nordic Premier (VT) as both teams fall short of the semifinals. Nordic assumed the lead in the 58th minute on a near post laser from Christopher Forrester off a counter attack. Tornadoes leveled 12 minutes later from Daniel Giraldo, but neither team would find the net again as their tournament comes to a close.
Empire United SA Syracuse (NY-W) clinched their spot in the semis after a solid preliminary round, capped off with a 1-0 victory over MCU Portland Phoenix (ME). Empire posted three consecutive shutouts, going 3-0, in the qualifying round. Alex Baynes netted the game winner today in the 80th minute to solidify Empire's spot in tomorrow's semifinal.
Regional winners of the Under-14 through Under-19 age groups earn a berth to the 2011 US Youth Soccer National Championships to be played July 26-31, at Reach 11 Sports Complex in Phoenix, Ariz.
The US Youth Soccer National Championships will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the Under-14 through Under-19 Boys and Girls age groups as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the Under-15 through Under-17 Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 60 teams.
