Opening Ceremony Welcomes Teams to the 2013 Region I Championships

Kingston, R.I. (June 27, 2013) – Teams, parents, referees, tournament officials and volunteers gathered Meade Stadium this afternoon for opening ceremonies to kickoff the beginning of the 2013 US Youth Soccer Region I (East) Championships, presented by the National Guard. Preliminary games begin tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I.

Nine teams are returning to regional competition as 2012 US Youth Soccer Region I Champions. On the girl’s side, Under-13 World Class FC 99 (E-NY), Under-14 YMS Xplosion (E-PA), Under-15 MSC Coyotes Green (MD), Under-17 BRYC 95 Elite (VA) and Under-18 VSA Heat Blue (VA) are back to defend their titles. Boys returning regional champions include the Under-13 PDA Rooney (NJ), Under-14 Bethesda Blue (MD), Under-16 Manahattan SC Paris Saint-Germain 96 (NY-E), and Under-17 Beadling SC 94/95 (PA-W).

Numerous other players are returning to this week’s tournament in hopes of realizing their goal of advancing to the 2013 US Youth Soccer National Championships Overland Park, Kan., July 22-28, at Overland Park Soccer Complex.

The top 256 boys and girls US Youth Soccer teams from 15 State Associations that make up US Youth Soccer Region I will compete for the regional title. All games will be held June 28-July 2 at the University of Rhode Island.

The US Youth Soccer National Championships, the oldest most prestigious youth soccer championship, will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the Under-13 through Under-19 Boys and Girls age groups as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the Under-15 through Under-18 Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 88 teams.
