Aiden McFadden scored the only goal of the match in the 6th minute after receiving a pass from Leon Maric in the box. Mcfadden’s far post strike flew past a diving Anthony Garduno, and into the back of the net.
"I thought we did a good job of sitting back and breaking down their play," Penn Fusion head coach, Mark Thomas said. "It wasn’t the prettiest win, but we are pretty happy with two wins in the group stage."
Both teams were victorious yesterday, and with the win, Penn Fusion sits alone on the top of the group as Pateadores slips into a second place tie with Michigan Wolves 99 (MI). Despite being down goal, Pateadores won the possession battle, and created their fair share of scoring chances.
When Pateadores was on the attack, Christopher Lopez was not far away as the forward found himself open in the box on a couple of occasions, but was unable to find the back of the net. Lopez had one of his best scoring opportunities in stoppage time of the second half when he received a pass from Robert Juarez on the right side of the box, but his shot sailed over the cross bar.
"I wasn’t disappointed with our performance today," Pateadores head coach, Mario Gonzalez said. "Penn Fusion was very opportunistic, and they got the goal they needed."
Pateadores is no stranger to big time tournaments, as the two-time Region IV Champions also have a Dallas Cup Championship under their belts. Gonzalez explains they will call on that experience in order to regroup.
"We have a day off tomorrow. So that is pretty nice," Gonzalez said. "Hopefully this will be a wakeup call for these guys so they know they aren’t going to be given anything. We look forward to potentially playing Penn Fusion again."
As for Thomas’s adjustments, he was a little concerned with the amount of chances his team conceded in the second half.
"I think we lost a little bit of our composure in the second half," Thomas said. "Pateadores is a good team, and we had a few composed heads, but we need a couple more."
Penn Fusion takes on Michigan Wolves on Friday, July 26 at 7:30 a.m. on field nine, and Pateadores faces off against Solar Chelsea at the same time on field 10.
