BATON ROUGE, La. (June 22, 2014) — Sunday brought an end to exciting preliminary games at the 2014 US Youth Soccer Region III (South) Championships, at the BREC Burbank-Soccer Complex in Baton Rouge, La. The chase for the Regional and National Championship continues for the 96 teams who have qualified to move on from their preliminary groups.

Georgia has the most teams advancing out of pool play with 19, while Florida is close behind with 17. The host Louisiana Soccer Association has seven teams advancing.

Monday will feature quarterfinal matches in the Under-14 through Under-16 age groups. The earliest games begin at 8:15 a.m. CT and continue throughout the day with the last matches kicking off at 1:30 p.m.

Eight of the nine returning 2013 Region III Champions are still alive in the hunt to defend their titles, including New Orleans-based 97 Louisiana Fire Navy. After dropping its opening game, the Fire required a critical 2-0 win on Sunday to advance to the quarterfinals.

“It goes without saying every year is a different year, but the level of competition just gets harder and harder, especially when you come in with that target on your back,” Fire head coach Stephen McAnespie said. “Everyone knows you’re the champions from the year before, so they want a piece of it.”

McAnespie said the girls are excited to have the chance to defend the title in their home state, but he knows there is still a lot of work to be done to get to that point.

“We’re looking at Tuesday, and we’ll see what happens,” he said. “We can’t get ahead of ourselves at all.”

Regional winners of the Under-13 through Under-19 age groups earn a berth to the 2014 US Youth Soccer National Championships, presented by the National Guard, which will be played July 22-27 at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md.

The US Youth Soccer National Championships will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions, as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the Under-14 through Under-18 Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 96 teams.

Girls Highlights

In Under-19 action, Lonestars 95 (S-TX) needed a win against IMG Academy (FL) to advance, while the Florida side required just a draw. IMG took control of the game early when Charlotte Herbertz and Yazmine Velez scored in the 12th and 13th minutes. Alyssa Conde pulled Lonestars within a goal when she found the back of the net just before halftime. However, neither side could break through the opposing defense in the second half, as IMG held on to book its spot in the semifinals with a 2-1 victory.

With a spot in the quarterfinals on the line, Under-18 Mandeville Lakers 95/96 (LA) earned a 3-0 win over HFC 96 Blue (AL). Both teams entered the contest with three points in the standings, but Mandeville gained the advantage on Sunday with goals from Abigail Childress, Allie White and Danielle Sabathe. The win helped the Louisiana side finish second in Pool B, while NASA 14 Elite (GA) won all three of its games to finish on top.

Under-17 97 Louisiana Fire Navy (LA) stayed alive in the chase to defend its Region III title with a crucial 2-0 win Sunday against Lonestars 97 Red (S-TX). The Fire took a 29th-minute lead when Kassandra Ortega and Alexandra Thomas each used speed on the ball to beat defenders down the left side, and Thomas finished the play by sliding her shot inside the far post. Madison Vise made it 2-0 shortly after halftime when she rounded a defender and found the back of the net. The crossbar twice denied the Louisiana side from extending the lead, but its defense held off the Lonestars’ push to keep a clean sheet. The win secured a second-place finish in Pool B for the Fire, while Lonestars fell to third place. South Carolina United 96 Elite (SC), which defeated Louisiana on Friday, finished on top of the group.

“It was really disappointing losing the first day, but it’s really how you bounce back,” Fire coach Stephen McAnespie said. “The good sign is the girls were mentally tough enough to a make sure they bounced back from the loss and got the results that were necessary.”

Under-14 Solar Chelsea Elite 00 (N-TX) also needed a win Sunday to guarantee a spot in the quarterfinals and a chance to defend its Region III title. The North Texas side ran into a tough Classics Elite (S-TX), which entered the day first in Pool A. With the game scoreless in the final minutes, a dangerous goal-bound Solar attempt on goal was stopped by a diving Classics keeper to deny the defending champions the win. The result left Solar in third place on goal differential, meaning there will be a new champion in the age group in 2014.

Boys Highlights

Entering Sunday in second place, FC Florida 95B (FL) needed just a draw against TSCH 96 (OK) to advance to the Under-18 quarterfinals. The Oklahoma side made it difficult for Florida, as Andrew Cass twice gave TSCH the lead. After Cass scored in the 34th minute, Florida’s Lucas DaSilva responded just before halftime to level the score. Cass put TSCH back up early in the second half, but Rielee Mohsin’s 76th-minute attempt from the left side flew just inside the far post to give Florida the draw it needed, as the game ended 2-2.

A 2-2 draw with MFC Fire 97 Premier (MS) helped 2013 Region III finalist NASA B15 Elite (GA) secure a second-place finish in the Under-17 Pool B and spot in the quarterfinals. After Walker Nance opened the scoring for NASA, the Georgia side required a Lukas Joyner equalizer in the 90th minute to earn the tie. MFC received goals from Richard Brohaugh and Branden Livingston to take a second-half lead before Joyner rescued NASA. A 2-1 win Sunday by Boca United 96/97 Gold (FL) helped it finish on top of the group.

Two-time defending Region III Champion Sunrise Elite 97/98 (FL) clinched a spot in the Under-16 quarterfinals with a 3-1 win Sunday against SC 97 (SC). Donald Emerson put Sunrise up just two minutes into the game and doubled the lead with a second goal in the 57th minute. SC pulled within a goal on a Jesus Reyes tally, but Emmanuel Perez scored in the final moments of the match to help the Florida side to the 3-1 victory.

Under-15 GSA Force 99 White (S-TX) and 98 CUFC Gold (NC) entered Sunday with identical numbers in all categories of the standings, but only one side would be able to advance from Pool C. Keiji Harper put GSA in front in the 14th minute, and Julian Romero doubled the lead five minutes later. Jon-Talen Maples added a late insurance goal to help GSA to a 3-0 win and place in the quarterfinals.
