While some teams have already secured their spot in Monday’s semifinals, the fate of most will be decided Sunday for the chance to advance.

Notes from today’s games of 6 of the 12 returning 2013 US Youth Soccer Region I Champions...

Under-13 Girls

Delaware Rush 00 (DE) continued right where they left off last year with a win on its first day of play and notched another win on day two against NHP Wildcats SC Firecats (NY-E). Firecats had some great chances in the first half but the Rush goalie, Syndey Keld, made some superb saves and got some help from the crossbar to keep Firecats scoreless in the first half. Rush’s Ashlee Brentlinger and Lauren Anshen had a connection that couldn’t be beat as Brentlinger had a corner kick and a cross that were both headed home by Anshen to put Rush up 2-0 in the first half. Firecats were knocking on the door throughout the entire second half and a penalty kick by Caitlin Kennedy pulled back a consolation goal for the Firecats.

“We’re from Delaware, a small state, so we want to come out and show that a small state can compete with a big state," Rush coach Stephen Smith said. "This is our seventh goal in regionals and we’ve only given up a single goal, on a pk, and have won them all. For some reason Rhode Island is good to us.

"We’ve been together for 2 years and these girls are like my daughters. They’ve been like family the past two years. This is my last year with them. We want to go out on top.”

U-19 Boys

PDA Harkes (NJ) is looking to defend its regional title and return to the US Youth Soccer National Championships, this time to play for the prestigious Under-19 Boys James P. McGuire Cup. A goal in the 17th minute by Alec Neumann put PDA up 1-0. A strong physical battle followed with neither team able to score in the second half and PDA finished 1-0 against NY Kosmos/Greek Americans (NY-E).

“Almost all the boys on the team play Division I soccer," said PDA’s coach John Murphy. "They’re here to get back to Nationals and play for the biggest trophy in youth soccer, the James P. McGuire Cup.”

Under-14 Boys

FSA FC Navy (CT) were finalists in the 2013 US Youth Soccer National Championships and is on its way to earning its chance to return. FSA scored right off the bat in just the 6th minute with a goal from Sigfus Arnason. An Anthony Melody goal in the 20th minute increased the FSA lead to 2-0. Nordic SC Premier (VT) could not break through the FSA defense and the score finished 2-0 keeping FSA undefeated at the Region I Championships.

Under-18 Boys

OBGC Rangers (MD) is no strangers to the Region I Championships having won and advanced to the US Youth Soccer National Championships through last year’s event. After starting this year with a win on opening day, Rangers faced Seacoast United Premier-PW (NH) on the second day of play. Rangers didn’t waste any time scoring with Heyner Pajaro finding the back of the net just seven minutes in. Seacoast tried to put a scare into Rangers but missed two good header chances in the first half. In the 22nd minute, Ranger’s Ofentse Kale got on the end of a long pass, beat a defender 1-on-1 and slotted a shot through the hands of a diving Seacoast keeper for a 2-0 lead at the half. Tough defense from both sides lead to a scoreless second half as neither team could break through for a goal.

Under-15 Boys

Penn Fusion SA (PA-E) faced off in its day two game against Fury Pro Performance Select (WV). Both teams had won their opening day games and were looking to try and seal its place in the semi-finals. Neither team could score in a chess match of a first half. Penn Fusion’s Justin Quintero finally found the answer in the 49th minute to give Penn Fusion the lead. Fury’s Collin Mocyunas scored a goal just a few minutes later to bring the score even at 1-1. Penn Fusion put the game out of reach with two quick goals by Jakob Frank and Kenneth Fenster in the 76th and 79th minutes. Penn Fusion is looking to defend its regional title and advance to the US Youth Soccer National Championships for a second year in a row.

Under-14 Girls

NEFC Elite (MA) fell just short of the championship game at the 2013 US Youth Soccer National Championships and is well on its way to making its return. NEFC Elite defeated Annandale United FC (VA) 4-1 to stay undefeated at the 2014 Region I Championships. NEFC’s Marykate McGuire, who has played with the Under-14 U.S. Girls National Team, opened the scoring in the 10th minute of play. Annandale evened up the score right before halftime with a Maria Pareja goal. In the second half, NEFC’s Taylor Kofton gave NEFC the lead for good with a bending shot from the left side of the box that went through the keeper’s hands. McGuire then scored two late goals, slotting a shot past the keeper and then two minutes later booming a shot just under the crossbar, to take away any doubt of NEFC getting the win.

NEFC coach Kerry O'Malley Baldwin talked about what being at regionals means to her girls.

“Our mentality is that we go into every game as an underdog. We have to expect to compete and play our best soccer every day. The game is a funny one, on the day you may not be a better team, so we know that every game may be a battle."

"Nationals last year was a fantastic experience for our group, it was unexpected because we were the underdogs. Getting back is always in the back of our minds. We set goals at the beginning of the season and we work towards achieving them and right now we’ve done a really good job at that. Not to look too far ahead of things, but that is something we did talk about at the beginning of the season and something we are working towards”

Regional winners of the Under-13 through Under-19 age groups earn a berth to the 2014 US Youth Soccer National Championships, presented by the National Guard, to be played July 22-27, at Maryland SoccerPlex in Germantown, Md.

The US Youth Soccer National Championships will consist of US Youth Soccer Regional Champions in the Under-13 through Under-19 Boys and Girls age groups as well as the US Youth Soccer National League qualifiers in the Under-14 through Under-18 Boys and Girls age groups to complete the field of 96 teams.
